The VC women's tennis team remained in play Thursday at the Western State Conference Singles and Doubles Championships with the duos of Talia Lieb and Nell Elaerts and Alexis Schmidt and Elizabeth Nguyen recording wins to advance in doubles play. Meanwhile, Belladora Moga, Schmidt, Lieb, Elaerts and Laura Rubio are still alive in the singles draw.
Lieb and Elaerts, the No. 3-seed in the bracket, won their only match of the day 8-0 over a team from Glendale to move into the quarterfinals. Schmidt and Nguyen won a first round match against a pair from LA Mission 8-4, and awaited their match against a duo from Antelope Valley in the Round of 16 when play was suspended for the day. Moga and Rubio won in the Round of 32 8-4 over a team from Antelope Valley before dropping a decision to the top-seeds from LA Mission. Dee Emami and Marcie McTigue dropped their opener to a duo from Bakersfield.
In singles, Lieb had a first round bye and awaits her Round of 32 match on Friday. Schmidt moved forward in the draw with an 8-0 win over an opponent from Antelope Valley and Moga advanced by default over an opponent from Santa Monica. Elaerts also moved forward via a first round bye while Rubio won by default over another foe from Santa Monica. Emami fell to her match-up from SMC and Nguyen dropped her opener against her Corsair opponent.
The women's Round of 32 will begin the day on Friday March 31 with play beginning at 10:00 am. The doubles quarterfinals are set to begin at 4:00 pm at the VC Tennis Center.
