The VC women's tennis team claimed an 8-1 victory over Santa Monica Tuesday at the VC Tennis Center. The Pirates swept two doubles matches and four singles matches without giving up a game in easily defeating the Corsairs. Alexis Schmidt, Belladora Moga and Elizabeth Nguyen all were double winners for Ventura (3-3), all holding their opponents to "love" on the scoreboard.
Ventura took a commanding 3-0 lead in doubles play. Schmidt and Nguyen blanked their opponents 8-0 in No. 2 doubles and Moga and Marcie McTigue did the same at the No. 3 slot. Meanwhile, Talia Lieb and Nell Elaerts were engaged in a close match at No. 1 doubles. The Pirates' pair finally earned the 9-8 win to put VC ahead 3-0 headed to singles play.
The Pirates quickly pulled away in singles play. Schmidt (No. 3 singles), Moga (No. 4 singles), Nguyen (No. 5 singles) and Laura Rubio (No. 6 singles) all won their singles matches love and love to clinch the team victory. Schmidt pulled in the final point with a love and one win in no. 2 singles. Lieb gave it a solid run for the VC sweep, falling in No. 1 singles, 7-6, 7-5.
The Pirates next will travel to Mt. San Antonio on Friday Feb. 24.
