The VC women's tennis team claimed a hard-fought 5-4 victory over visiting Los Angeles Mission Thursday. The doubles team of Alexis Schmidt and Elizabeth Nguyen won a marathon match in No. 2 doubles and Talia Lieb won her No. 1 singles match in three sets to clinch the victory for Ventura (2-3, 2-3).
In doubles play, the Pirates fell behind dropping the No. 1 match before evening things out with an 8-3 win by Marcie McTigue and Belladora Moga at No. 3. Alexis Schmidt and Elizabeth Nguyen then put VC ahead by going the distance in No. 2 doubles, defeating the Eagles' duo 8-8 (8-6).
Mission retook the lead with a pair of wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles before Schmidt tied the match at 3-3 with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph in the No. 3 slot. The Eagles went back ahead with a win at No. 2 singles setting the stage for the Pirate comeback.
Moga won her No. 4 singles contest 6-2, 6-2 to knot the match at 4-4. Then, Lieb outlasted her opponent in No. 1 singles, pulling out the three-set thriller, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 6-3, for the Ventura victory.
VC next hosts Santa Monica on Tuesday Feb. 21 at 2:00 pm at the VC Tennis Center.
