Members of the Ventura College women's tennis team opened play in the Western State Conference Singles and Doubles Championships Thursday at the VC Tennis Center. Victoria Zegers led a host of Pirates moving into the round of 32 in singles play, and she teamed up with Hanna Dever to move into the quarterfinals of the doubles draw. Alyssa McClain and Elizabeth Nguyen also produced a pair of wins in doubles to move into the round of eight.
In singles play, Zegers defeated her opponent from Santa Monica 8-0 to move into the round of 32 scheduled for Friday afternoon at 1:45. Tanya Thompson also moved forward with an 8-6 victory over a player from Canyons and McClain won over an opponent from Glendale, 8-6. Dever, the No. 9-seed in the draw, received a first round bye and will open the tournament in the round of 32 on Friday at 12:30 pm.
Iskra Volic dropped her opening singles match to an opponent from LA Mission, 8-3, while Elizabeth Nguyen fell in the round of 64 to an opponent from Santa Monica, 8-2. Maria Gomez fell in her opening match 8-1 to a player from Canyons.
In doubles, Dever and Zegers, the No. 7-seed, used a by to get to the round of 16 before defeating the No. 8-seed from Bakersfield, 9-8. McClain and Nguyen won their first match by default before besting the No. 4-seed from Glendale, 8-5, to move into Saturday's quarterfinals. Volic and Thompson dropped a heartbreaker in the first round, 8-6, and Ava Gallo and Gomez lost in their first round match, as well.
The tournament continues with singles play beginning at 12:30 pm Friday April 1, and doubles play will resume Saturday April 2 at the VC Tennis Center.
