The VC women's tennis team continues to show signs of improvement, but dropped a close 5-4 decision at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita Tuesday. Elizabeth Nguyen and Alyssa McClain were each double winners on the day for the Pirates (4-5, 3-5).
The match started close in doubles play. After CoC claimed the No. 2 slot, McLain and Nguyen posted an 8-3 win in No. 3 doubles. Soon thereafter, Hanna Dever and Victoria Zegers dropped a narrow 9-7 decision in No. 1 doubles, giving Canyons the 2-1 advantage headed to singles.
Nguyen earned VC's first singles point with a 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 4 slot and McClain tied the match at 3-3 with a love and one win in No. 5 singles. The Cougars claimed the match with wins at Nos. 3 and 2 singles, respectively before Dever claimed a 7-6, 6-3 win in No. 1 singles to finish the day.
The Pirates next travel to Bakersfield on Thursday March 10 for a match with the Renegades.
