The Pirates' women's tennis team traveled to Santa Moncia Thursday, dropping a 6-3 decision to the Corsairs in Western State Conference play. Ventura led 2-1 after doubles play, with wins by Iskra Volic and Tanya Thompson at No. 2 and Alyssa McClain and Elizabeth Nguyen at No. 3, but dropped a pair of close singles matches resulting in the team defeat. Nguyen was the only Pirate to win in singles play.
Volic and Thompson posted an 8-5 win in No. 2 doubles after McClain and Nguyen claimed the No. 3 doubles match 8-1 as Ventura took a 2-1 lead headed to singles play.
Nguyen secured her No. 4 match 6-4, 6-0, but she was the only Pirate victory in singles. Both Volic and Ava Gallo dropped decisions in tiebreaker situations.
VC (2-4, 1-4) next hosts Antelope Valley on Tuesday Feb. 22.
