Ventura Qualifies Three in Singles, Three in Doubles for Ojai

The VC women's tennis team qualified three singles players for the CCCAA State Championships with one more still in the running, and they qualified three doubles teams for The Ojai in play at the Western State Conference Championships Saturday at the VC Tennis Center. Lea Meschke, Alyssa Powell and Allie De Marco all punched their tickets to state, with Jule Lauinger still in the hunt in singles, while the duos of Powell and De Marco, Meschke and Lauinger, and Keressa Garland and Tricia McClain all qualified in doubles.

In singles play, No. 7-seed Meschke qualified for state with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over the No. 10-seed from Santa Barbara. She fell in the quarterfinals to The No. 2 seed from Bakersfield, 6-0, 6-2.

No. 9 Powell lost to the No. 8-seed from Bakersfield in an extended 6-1, 4-6, 10-3 decision and No. 16 Lauinger lost in the round of 16 to the draw's top seed from Glendale, 6-0, 6-0. The teammates then faced off in the backdraw with Powell prevailing 6-4, 6-3 to claim her spot in The Ojai. Lauinger, though, is still in contention for a state berth with a match scheduled for Friday April 13 against the No. 14-seed from Santa Barbara.

No. 11-seeded De Marco lost in the round of 16 to the No. 6 seed from Glendale, 6-4, 6-3, but won her spot at the state championships with a 6-1, 6-0 win over the No. 14-seed from Santa Barbara.

Meanwhile in doubles play, No. 5-ranked Powell and De Marco played in the quarterfinals Saturday, punching their Ojai ticket, bu the fell to the No. 2-seed from Glendale, 8-3. No. 7-seed Meschke and Lauinger also played a quarterfinal match, dropping an 8-2 decision to the No. 4-seed from Bakersfield. VC other remaining doubles pair, No. 12 Garland and McClain, won their backdraw match over an unseeded duo from Canyons to qualify for The Ojai.

Lauinger has a singles match with a state berth on the line on Friday April 13 as the WSC Championships conclude at the VC Tennis Center. Then, all the state qualifiers will compete at The Ojai beginning April 26.
