Pirate freshman Mariko Sagara completed her run through the Western State Conference with a pair of wins Thursday, claiming the individual singles championship at the VC Tennis Center.  She now has a mark of 20-2 this season, headed to the CCCAA State Championships at The Ojai.

in her semifinal match, Sagara was down but not out.  She lost the first set 4-6 and was down 5-3 in the second, on the verge of elimination.  She turned things around to capture the final four games of the set, forcing a super tiebreaker with the 7-5 set win.  Sagara then won the match in the tiebreaker, 10-6.

The final was much easier sailing for the freshman from Nagoya, Japan.  She claimed the conference's top prize with a straight-set 6-0, 6-2 victory.

Sagara will enter the CCCAA State Championships at The Ojai Tournament as the No. 2 seed in the draw.  In doubles, she and partner Jessica Powell have earned the No. 13 seed.  The tournament is April 21-24 in the Ojai and Ventura areas.
