The Ventura College women's tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision against Santa Barbara City in Santa Barbara. Ventura picked up wins at No. 1 doubles and then again at No. 1 singles, No. 3 singles and finally at No. 6 singles. Mariko Sagara was victorious on the doubles and singles side of the day.
Ventura (2-4, 1-1) started the day off on the right foot with Sagara and Jessica Powell pulling a 8-2 win at No. 1 singles. The Pirates though dropped the final two matches of doubles play to fall behind 2-1 heading to singles play. Sagara was able to tie the match with a straight sets win at No. 1 singles. Ventura split at No. 2 and No. 3 singles with Jia Wiebe earning a three set victory to give the Pirates a 3-3 tie with three matches left to play. Dropping two of the final three matches of singles play though cost the Pirates who fell 5-4 to the Vaqueros.
Ventura will host Glendale on Tuesday Feb. 23 at 2:00 pm in their next Western State Conference match. The Pirates then will go on the road for their next three contests starting with a Thursday Feb. 25 match at Santa Monica set to start at 1:00 pm.
