The Ventura College women's tennis team traveled to the high desert to take on Antelope Valley and returned home with a 7-2 victory in their Western State Conference opener. Ventura lost just one match on the singles side and one on the doubles side. Mariko Sagara paired with Jessica Powell to win their No. 1 doubles match and Sagara swept her No. 1 singles contest.
Ventura (2-3, 1-0) won the No. 2 doubles contest 8-5 with Jia Wiebe and Megan Fleming earning the victory. VC then was able to win five of the six singles contests only losing at No. 2. The Pirates won 10 of the 12 total singles sets. Wiebe claimed a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles. Fleming was able to bring home a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles. Audrey Karbum was a straight sets winner in No. 5 singles by scores of 6-3, 6-2. Finally, Theresa Doal was also a straight sets winner at No. 6 singles by scores of 6-0, 6-0.
The Pirates square off against Santa Barbara City College on Thursday Feb. 18 for their second WSC match of the season. The two teams are set to play at 2:00 pm at the Ventura College Tennis Center. VC will then play host to Glendale College on Tuesday Feb. 23 at 2:00 pm.
