The Ventura College women's tennis team completed play in the North/South challenge by splitting a pair of matches. In their morning match up the Pirates dropped a close 5-4 decision to Fresno. Responding in the final match of the weekend with a 5-1 win over Chabot. Mariko Sagara claimed a pair of wins at No. 1 singles and was a part of a split of wins at No. 1 doubles.
Fresno 5 Ventura 4
Ventura entered the match looking for their first win of the season and dropped the first two matches of doubles play by 8-1 and 8-2 scores before rallying to salvage the third match of doubles play 8-1. Theresa Doal and Tricia McClain were the winning doubles team at No. 3 doubles. Then the Pirates were able to claim wins at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 singles play. Sagara won her match at No. 1 singles 6-3 and 6-2. Megan Fleming won at No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 victory. Doral claimed a straight sets win at No. 6 singles 6-1 and 6-1. But, losses at No. 2, No.3 and No. 4 singles were enough for Fresno to overcome the Pirates.
Ventura 5 Chabot 1
The Pirates came out on fire and winning their first two matches of doubles play and then claiming the first three contests in singles play for a 5-1 victory. Sagara and her partner Jessica Powell were able to claim a 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Jia Wiebe and Flemming picked up a 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles. Sagara, Powell and Wiebe each won straight set wins respectively in singles play to earn the Pirates their first win of the season. Sagara won at No. 1 singles, Powell at No. 2 singles and Wiebe at No. 3 singles.
Ventura is now 1-3 on the season. They will play again at Antelope Valley on Tuesday Feb. 16 in a 2:00 pm match.
