VC sophomore Cristal Vargas sets up a one-touch shot into the net in the 62nd minute Friday in the Pirates game against Bakersfield at the Sportsplex.

The VC women's soccer team took a lead in the 65th minute from a goal by Cristal Vargas and an assist by Jennifer Ramirez before Bakersfield scored twice in the next eight minutes in Ventura's 2-1 setback to the Renegades. Although VC totaled 12 shots, eight on goal, they were unable to get a second goal on the board. Tanaya Moreno and Alondra Sanchez also played well for Ventura (2-4-2).

Both teams struggled to build consistent scoring chances in the first half. The Pirates had six corner kick chances in the first 45 minutes of the game and only managed four shots, two on goal. BC, meanwhile, totaled two shots on frame in the period and the teams were level at 0-0 at intermission.

Samantha Quinonez had a free kick that could not find the net in the 50th minute before Ramirez drove the field, stopping just inside the penalty box and passing to Vargas who used a one-touch strike to slot the ball inside the near post in the 62nd minute.

Bakersfield answered in the 65th minute and then took the lead on the Pirates' own goal in the 70th.

The Pirate offense continued to generate solid scoring chances in the final 20+ minutes of play, but VC could not find the equalizer in the setback.

Ventura next hosts Irvine Valley on Tuesday Sept. 23 befoe opening Western State Conference play on Friday Sept. 26 at Moorpark.
