The Pirate soccer team came from behind Saturday afternoon to draw with Fresno City College 1-1 in a physical contest at the VC Sportsplex. Jennifer Galindo scored off a corner kick for Ventura (4-1-2) to level the score while Sibella Donnelly had four saves in goal to anchor the VC defense.
Ventura fell behind in the first half of play. Fresno scored in the 31st minute, and the score remained through intermission.
It did not take the Pirates long to find the equalizer in the second half. On a beautiful set piece, Andrea Ibarra passed the corner kick short to Yahaira Ramirez who sent a cross just outside the penalty box. Daisy Cisneros had a great run to the ball as a distraction before Galindo hit a one-timer to the top left corner of the net for the goal. VC had solid play defensively from Elisa Merlos and Galindo had a strong effort in the midfield for the Pirates.
Ventura had six shots total in the game with three on target while Fresno countered with five shots on goal.
The Pirates will next travel to Cerritos College on Tuesday Sept. 19 before hosting Bakersfield on Friday Sept. 22.
