Soccer Fights to Draw at Rio Hondo

In a highly competitive contest, the VC women's soccer team fought to 2-2 draw with unbeaten Rio Hondo Wednesday in Whittier. Crystal Vargas and Jaemi Toledo each scored for the Pirates (4-1-1), who stretched their own unbeaten streak to five games.

The Roadrunners were on the offensive early, but goal keeper Sibella Donnelly kept them off the board with a brilliant save in the eight minute of play. Rio Hondo broke through with a score in the 31st minute on a long-range shot from 30-yards out and went into intermission with the 1-0 advantage.

The Pirates received an equalizer in the 62nd minute of play when Vargas found the inside of the net off a nice crossing pass from Alondra Sanchez.

VC took a 2-1 lead soon thereafter when Toledo played a mishandled ball by the Rio Hondo keeper, putting it into the back of the net.

The Roadrunners leveled the count with a goal in th 72nd minute for the 2-2 draw. 

Ventura had seven shots in the game with four on goal while Rio Hondo hit six shots with four on target.

The Pirates return home on Saturday Sept. 16 with an afternoon tilt against Fresno City College. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 pm at the Sportsplex. It will also be Youth Soccer Day at the game with all youth in a team jersey admitted free to the contest.
