Ventura Offense Comes Alive in Playoff Victory

The VC women's soccer team unleashed an offensive barrage on Wednesday evening, defeating Citrus 4-0 in the first found of the CCCAA Southern California Regional Playoffs in Claremont. Alexis Arrieta, Maggie MordecaiAlix Tirado and Alyssa Cornwell all scored for No. 18-seeded VC (10-8-4) as they advanced to the second round of the playoffs on Saturday Nov. 19 at No. 2 Santiago Canyon College.

Ventura got on the board in the 13th minute when Arrieta found the inside of the goal with a shot from 20-yards out. Maggie Mordecai made the Pirates' side more comfortable when she converted an assist from Alix Tirado for another score in the 24th minute of play.

Tirado had a pair of chances at the 33rd and 43rd minutes of play, but she could not connect to extend the Pirates' lead. Ventura went into halftime leading 2-0.

VC went ahead 3-0 in the 67th minute when Tirado took the ball off a turnover, handling the pass from Cornwell and slotting the ball into the goal for a 3-0 VC lead.

Cornwell served up  the cherry on top with a score in the 79th minute to extend the Pirate advantage to 4-0. 

The Owls totaled 13 shots in the game, five on goal. Kambria Haughton had four saves guarding the goal and Isa Garcia recorded the final save of the night. Ventura recorded 12 shots, eight on frame.

The Pirates advance to the second round of the playoffs for a match-up at Santiago Canyon College in Orange County on Saturday Nov. 19
