Elisa Merlos anchored a strong defensive effort by the Pirates in a 1-1 draw at Fresno City College Friday.

After the long trip to Fresno, the Pirate soccer team's defense led by Elisa Merlos played another outstanding game in Ventura's 1-1 draw against the Rams, a State Final Four team from a year ago. Kaelyn Federis scored VC's lone goal while Kambria Haughton had six saves in goal.

In the opening seconds of the game, Fresno attacked offensively only to have Haughton turn back their shot, setting an early tone. Each team had chances to score in the first 45 minutes, but neither team was able to find the net. The Pirates and Rams were scoreless at halftime.

FCC took the lead in the 66th minute with a ball hit over the top. The Pirates countered quickly, however, as Federis scored a set piece goal a minute later to level the count at 1-1.

Merlos led a strong defensive effort in the back of the Pirate line-up, joined by Federis, Hannah Price and Monica Blumkin with Haughton in goal.

Offensively, Ventura produced seven shots, three on frame, while Fresno had 13 with seven on goal.

VC returns home on Tuesday Sept. 20 hosting Citrus College at 6:30 pm at the Sportsplex.
