Sammy Zanini scored a goal in the 70th minute off a free kick, but it was not enough as the Pirates soccer team lost its Western State Conference opener at Santa Barbara Tuesday, 2-1.

The Ventura College women's soccer team opened Western State Conference North Division play Tuesday night at Santa Barbara's La Playa Stadium, coming away with a 2-1 setback to the Vaqueros. Sammy Zanini netted the lone goal for VC (5-3-2, 0-1) in the 68th minute. The Pirates had 10 shots in the game with five on goal. Aracely Castro recorded four saves.

The Vaqueros took the early lead with a score in the 14th minute of play. They came back after halftime with a goal in the 60th minute for a 2-0 advantage.

Zanini halved the deficit with a score off a free kick from 30 yards out, but is was not enough as the Pirates dropped the 2-1 decision.

Ventura next hosts Moorpark on Friday Oct. 4. Kickoff at the VC Sportsplex will be at 5:30 pm.
