Ventura Races Past Hancock in WSC Opener

The Pirates' women's soccer team wasted little time in deciding the outcome of their Western State Conference North Division opener Tuesday night at the Sportsplex. Paulina Aldrete scored a goal 31seconds into the game, beginning an avalanche of five goals in under seven minutes for VC as they rolled past Allan Hancock College 9-1. Aldrete, Jasmin Ambriz and Yamile Mondragon scored two goals each for the Pirates (3-5-4, 1-0) while Audrey Castillo and Ambriz each recorded a pair of assists in the game.

Castillo assisted Aldrete's opening-minute score before Ambriz scored off an assist from Mondragon in the second minute. Castillo made is 3-0 3:08 into the contest off of Ambriz's helper before Ambriz scored off Mondragon's assist in the sixth minute. Mondragon and Ambriz turned it around 40 seconds later for a 5-0 Pirate advantage before the seats were even warm.

After a Bulldog goal made it 5-1, Aldrete netted her second goal, also with help from Castillo, in the 14th minute. Denissa Garcia Rodriguez converted Castillo's third assist of the night into Ventura's seventh goal in the 29th minute of play. The Pirates led at halftime, 7-1.

Six minutes into the final half, Mondragon found the net for her second goal with an assist from Ambriz. Finally, in the 64th minute, Natalie Landsberg converted Aldrete's corner kick for the final 9-1 margin.

VC goalies Aracely Castro and Maya Escobar combined for three saves on a night which saw the Pirates take 19 shots with 12 on goal.

The Pirates next travel to Santa Barbara on Friday Oct. 12 for a 7:30 pm match with the Vaqueros at La Playa Stadium.
