Pirates' Soccer Season Ends in Playoffs

Playing in the post-season for the 21st time in 22 years, the VC women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 result at Fullerton Thursday afternoon in the Play-In Round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs. VC did get off 11 shots in the game, with five on goal, but could not find the back of the net. Goalie Maya Escobar recorded two saves in the match.

Fullerton, the No. 14 seed, jumped on No. 19 Ventura early, scoring a goal in the first minute, and another in the eighth minute of play. The Pirates had opportunities on a corner kick by Audrey Castillo in the 15th minute, a shot on goal by Paola Gonzalez six minutes later, and a corner kick taken by Sirena Romero shortly thereafter, but could not punch through. The first half ended with the Pirates trailing 2-0.

In the second half, the Hornets netted their third score in the 58th minute to put the match out of reach. VC had a pair of corner kick opportunities, from Romero in the 57th and by Miranda Vasquez in the 66th. The game ended with Fullerton claiming the 3-0 victory.

The Pirates, whose roster included 22 freshmen and just three sophomores, end the season with a record of 9-12-2 against a schedule that featured eight matches against teams in the Top-20 in the national polls. They finished 4-4 and in third place in the Western State Conference North Division.
