Soccer Blanks Cuesta 2-0 in San Luis Obispo

The Ventura College soccer team made it two wins in a row Tuesday afternoon with a 2-0 shutout victory over Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo. Gabrielle Pido scored both goals for the Pirates (9-9-2, 4-2) as they remain in the hunt for a post-season playoff berth.

It did not take long for the Pirates to get their legs back after the long trip up the coast. Pido netted her first goal of the game in the 11th minute from an assist by Paola Gonzalez for a 1-0 Ventura advantage. The Pirates dominated the ball, taking 30 shots in the game with 18 on goal, compared with two shots on goal for the Cougars. VC kept up the pressure with a corner kick by Paulina Aldrete in the 20th minute, and a free kick from Miranda Vasquez in the 23rd.  Vasquez also had a corner in the 37th minute, but the score remained 1-0 at halftime.

Vasquez had another corner kick in the 51st minute, and Esmeralda Murillo took a free kick in the 86th before Pido connected on her second score in the 59th minute with an assist by Kayla Simmons Allon. With the 2-0 lead, VC continued to attack with Audrey Castillo hitting a shot on goal three minutes later. Castillo took a corner kick in the 71st minute and Sirena Romero turned a free kick into a shot on goal in the 74th. Romero had two more shots off the free kick as the clock wound down for the 2-0 Pirate victory.

VC goalie Maya Escobar recorded two saves in the shutout.

The Pirates will return home for their final two regular season matches. They host Santa Barbara on Tuesday Nov. 7 before facing off with Moorpark on Friday Nov. 10. Both contests are slated to kick off at 6:00 pm at the VC Sportsplex.
