Trio of Pirates Named All-American in Soccer

Three standouts from the 2016 Western State Conference champion Ventura College soccer team were named All-Americans by the National Soccer Coaches of America, and were honored at its national convention earlier this month in Los Angeles.  Sophomores Janelle Garcia, Jennifer Orozco and Melissa Cardenas were all named second-team All-American by the NSCAA, and also received first team All-West Region accolades.

Garcia, who prepped at Oxnard High School, was an offensive force for the Pirates, finishing third in the state in goals and points with 30 goals and nine assists during the season.

Orozco, a two-year standout for VC from Buena High School, completed the team's 1-2 punch with 19 scores and nine assists.

Cardenas, also an Oxnard High School product, anchored the Ventura defense and also scored five goals during the campaign.

The three are the 14th, 15th and 16th all-americans in program history.

This is also the first time in team history that three players were honored by the NSCAA in the same season, with two receiving honors in 2011.
