WOMEN'S SOCCER: The Pirates' soccer ship has a captain, and its sophomore AJ Tewes. Forced to play more of an offensive role in the past few games, Tewes has made the most of the opportunity, and Thursday night she scored two goals in VC's 3-1 victory at Santa Barbara City College. Although Ventura (13-3-2, 8-2-1) needs help to claim the program's 16th Western State Conference championship in 18 years, the Pirates remain in the hunt with the win. Delanie Gavid also scored for the Pirates in the victory.
Ventura was stunned on October 15 by the Vaqueros, 3-0, and they were not going to allow history to repeat itself. The teams battled in an intense contest that was 0-0 after the first 45 minutes of play. The Pirates finally broke through in the 58th minute when Gavid assisted a score by Tewes. SBCC was able to equalize in the 70th, but Gavid scored the game-winner off of a corner kick in the 78th minute. Tewes then closed the scoring with an incredible goal from midfield in the 85th minute, sealing the win for VC.
The Pirates, however, still remain behind Los Angeles Pierce in the standings. VC is behind with two losses and a tie on its schedule while the Brahmas only have one loss with a tie. VC needs a victory at Allan Hancock College next week coupled with a Moorpark win over Pierce to claim a share of the title.
The Pirates close their WSC schedule on Tuesday Nov. 12 in Santa Maria against the Hancock Bulldogs at 3:00 pm and return for their regular-season home finale on Friday Nov. 15 in a non-conference match against San Bernardino Valley College at 4:00 pm.
