WOMEN'S SOCCER:  Despite not putting forth their best effort, especially in the opening half, the VC women's soccer team, ranked No. 9 in the country in the latest NSCAA poll, managed a 1-1 draw with No. 10 San Diego Miramar College at the VC Sportsplex Tuesday night. Macey Herrera took a pass from Delanie Gavid, used some nifty footwork to dispatch of the charging Jet goal keeper, and easily placed the ball in the net for the equalizer in the 55th minute of the match.

The Pirates (4-1-1) did not bring their "A" game in the first half, struggling to maintain possession against their aggressive opponent. Miramar took the lead in the 23rd minute on a counter attack, and maintained their advantage in play throughout the first 45 minutes. Herrera had a chance to equalize on a header in the 25th minute, but Ventura chances were few and far between in the opening period.

VC came out with more focus in the second half, pulling even just 10 minutes into play on Herrera's sixth goal of the season. The Pirates had a few more chances to take the lead, and the defense played a solid half, but the Pirates settled for the tie.

After opening the year playing four ranked teams in six matches, the Pirates will take two weeks to regroup before beginning defense of their Western State Conference crown. VC will host Moorpark on Tuesday Oct. 1 in the WSC opener for both teams. Kickoff is slated to be at 5:30pm at the VC Sportsplex.
