VC Drops First Match of Season

WOMEN'S SOCCER:  Traveling to No.3-ranked Santiago Canyon, No. 9 Ventura suffered its first defeat of the 2013 season by a 5-2 margin at the Hawks. Tatianna Orozco scored a goal in the first half, and Macey Herrera converted a Lianna Ambriz assist, but it was not enough to overcome the highly-ranked Hawks. It is the fifth time in the past six seasons that Santiago Canyon has dealt VC (3-1-0) its first defeat of the season.

The Pirates played well in the opening 20 minutes of play, but that was eliminated when miscommunication on the Pirate defense resulted in a Hawk goal in the 22nd minute. Orozco equalized the score in the 33rd minute converting a corner kick from Guadelupe Magaña, but Santiago Canyon scored just befor ethe half to take a 2-1 lead into intermission.

The Hawks socerd again in the 50th minute, and on a penalty kick 10 minutes later to put the match out of reach. Herrera's goal in the 71st minute halved the margin, but Santiago Canyon netted another score with 12 minutes remaining to set the final margin.

The Pirates will travel to Santa Monica on Friday Sept. 13 before returning home on Tuesday Sept. 17 against No. 16 San Diego Miramar at 6:00 pm.
