Robin Hester enters his 23rd year as an assistant coach for VC in 2023-24. He is widely recognized as one of the top assistant coaches in the state and the Pirates have a record of 560-121 (an .822 winning percentage), including a Western State Conference record of 226-14 (.942) with 18 conference titles and a 37-17 mark in the post-season (.685). They have advanced to the state Elite Eight 10 times, winning the state championship in 2002, 2010 and 2014. Coach Hester brings 31 years and 981 games (721 of them victories) of coaching experience to the Pirates' bench.

With Hester's assistance, Ventura College has become the most-recognized academic achieving community college women's basketball program in the country. VC has been awarded three CCCAA State Scholar Team Awards, 2002, 2009 and 2015, and earned recognition by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association on its National Academic Honor Roll for 19 of the past 20 years (2004-2023), including the No. 2 rank for the 2008-09 and 2019-20 seasons. The 2019-20 team had a program record 3.544 grade point average for the academic year. The Pirates have earned above a 3.0 team Grade Point Average in 31 of the last 34 semesters, including 15 straight, heading into 2023-24.

While at Ventura College, Hester has helped coach 11 WBCA All-Americans, four state players of the year, 27 All-State players, 11 WSC Most Valuable Players and 83 All-WSC honorees. Additionally, Ventura College has produced 58 Academic All-State Award winners since 2009-10.  in Hester's 22 years on staff at VC, 116 students athletes have transferred to four-year schools with 69 playing at that level (16 Division I, 31 Division II, 16 NAIA and 8 Division III).

A native of Independence, Kan., Coach Hester played basketball two seasons at Coe College, an NCAA Division III school in Cedar Rapids, IA. He began his coaching experience in 1989, working boys and girls summer camps, starting at the Heart of America Basketball Camp in Salina, Kan. He moved to the coaching ranks permanently at Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, serving as an assistant boy's coach in 1992 and 1993.

Coach Hester spent the 1994 season as the graduate assistant for the men's team at Ithaca College (NY). He helped the Bombers to a 21-6 record and a conference title.

Moving to California for the 1995 season, Hester spent four seasons assisting the men's ('95) and women's ('96-'98) programs at Victor Valley College in Victorville. He helped the Rams men's team to a 20-11 record in 1995 and to their first playoff berth in 16 years. Over the next three years he helped lead the Rams women's team to a combined 63-30 record, including a conference title in 1997. Over that time VVC qualified for the state playoffs each year, twice advancing to the Sweet 16, losing the 1996 Regional Final to Ventura.

Coach Hester moved to the University of Minnesota in 1999 where he was the Coordinator of Basketball Operations before returning to VVC in 2000 as the co-head coach for the women's team. He also served as the interim head coach for VVC's men in 2001.

Hester also coached with the Ventura Galaxy girls high school AAU team in Ventura from 2002 through 2007.

Coach Hester is currently the Social Media Coordinator of the CCCWBCA state executive committee, and also served as the coaches' association's Historian for nine years, He was also the national JC/CC representative on the WBCA Assistant Coaches Committee, speaking at the 2005 WBCA National Convention in Indianapolis. He currently is an adjunct faculty member at VC in kinesiology and health education, and is on the college's Curriculum Committee. He also serves as the Sports Information Officer for the Pirate Athletic Department.

Hester and his wife, Fabiana, were married in 2007 and reside in Ventura. Their daughter, Leila, was born in 2013.
