Pirates' Women's Basketball Honors 2019 Favorite Teachers

Pirates' Women's Basketball Honors 2019 Favorite Teachers

Each year, every member of the sophomore class of the Ventura College women's basketball team selects a "Favorite Teacher" based on their own personal criteria. 2018-19 is the 14th year in which the team has honored their favorite teachers, and 76 awards have been presented, including this year.

On Saturday January 19, VCCCD Board member Josh Chancer, VC Interim President Dr. Damon Bell and VC Vice President Dr. Kim Hoffmans helped the team honor the latest class of Favorite Teachers. These instructors, through their skill, expertise, thoughtfulness, and humanity have earned the distinction of being named the team's 2019 "Favorite Teachers".

Bill Hendricks, Photography, selected by Cece Quintino

Considering I've only attended Ventura College for one semester, I would like to recognize not necessarily a teacher in the classroom, but a teacher of life with whom I have been fortunate to cross paths. My mentor Bill Hendricks has been a pivotal individual in my personal growth here at VC. From introducing me to useful skills – like installing wooden floors in a home - to rekindling my connection to my own Cuban culture – including a black bean recipe that is almost better than my grandma's, almost. Bill taught me, in the short time I've been here, the beauty of life that most don't see; such as living life with courage and not letting fear nor adversity steer one away from a chosen path. This is why I would like to thank Bill, along with his wife Cindy, for being a light in my life this school year. Thank you for all you do!

Jennifer Garcia, English, selected by Larryssa Russell

I would like to thank my English professor Jennifer Garcia. I took her English 1A and 1B classes, and learned more than the standard curriculum. Professor Garcia spent time in one-on-one sessions, teaching me to be patient with myself and to get past my frustrations with writing. She helped me to stay calm and to slow down in the expression of my ideas. I learned to go back and re-read and re-write when necessary, and became much better at expressing myself through my writing. Jenna is kind and caring and her patience and understanding helped me become a better student and better person. She had confidence in me, and made sure that I learned to have confidence in myself. Thank you Professor Garcia.
