Men's and Women's Track & Field Each Second at WSC North Meet

The VC men's and women's track & field teams both placed second of six competing teams at the Western State Conference North meet Friday at Bakersfield College. Charlotte Allison claimed three individual golds, Stina Johansson won two races and Cassandra O'Reilly also won an event to lead the Pirate women. Meanwhile, Jaedon Rogers won an individual gold and also claimed a bronze finish for the Ventura men.

The Pirate women scored 137 points to finish in the runner-up spot among the six competing teams. Cuesta claimed first with 156 points and Bakersfield was third with 130 points.

Allison claimed the 100m hurdles in a time of 17.58 with O'Reilly breaking the tape at 17.66.  Allison also won the high jump at 5'1 1/4" and won the long jump leaping 16' 3 2/3".  O'Reilly, meanwhile won gold in the shot put with a toss of 38' 9 3/4", and she came in fifth in the javelin.

Johansson was a double-winner on Friday, crossing the finish line first in the 1500m at 4:44.30 and winning the 3000m in 10:07.46.

In the sprints, Aubrianna Smith was second in the 100m, just .13s behind first while Ariana Vera won silver in the 200m, .22s away from gold. Anissa Cason finished sixth in the 400m and added points for fifth in the high jump. Alexandra Sanchez won bronze in the 800m and was sixth in the 1500m while Brenda Garcia finished sixth in the 800m. 

In field events, Michelle Sanchez placed third in the discus, fourth in the javelin, and sixth in the shot put and hammer throw. Jaime Lozano won bronze in the hammer and was fourth in the discus while Denise Cardona earned points in the hammer (fifth), discus and javelin (sixth).

VC's 4x100m relay team of Smith, O'Reilly, Nicole Rivera Cortez and Vera crossed the finish line in first with a time of 49.99.  The 4x400m relay quartet of Rivera Cortez, Cason, Smith and Garcia placed fourth.

On the men's side, VC totaled 101 points, finishing behind Bakersfield at 166 and ahead of Santa Barbara with 89.

Rogers claimed Ventura's lone gold with a triple jump mark of 42' 7 2/5" and he was also third in the long jump. 

Josh Weinerth won silver in the 3000m while Isaiah Slagboom, Ramiro Mateos and Alex Canales came in third, fourth and fifth, respectively in the 3k. Canales, Mateos and Slagboom also finished third, fourth and sixth, respectively in the 1500m run.

Isaiah Martinez Spence was third in the 400m and Mathew Siroky won bronze in the 800m. Meanwhile Kyle Morrissey finished sixth in the 110m hurdles.

In the field events, Mathew Cortez was second in the javelin and fifth in the shot put and Christian Alejandre won silver in the discus and bronze in the hammer. Danilo Juarez finished third in the javelin.

The Pirates' 4x100m relay with Angel Gomez, Ethan Figlio, Rogers and Julian Gibson came in fourth, as did the 4x400m team of Figlio, Gomez, Gibson and Martinez Spence. 

The Pirate track and field multi-event athletes will travel to UC Santa Barbara for the Gaucho Invitational on March 9-11 while the remainder of the teams will compete in the Occidental Classic in Eagle Rock on March 12.
