VC sophomore Serenity Valoaga scored wins in the discus and shot put events Friday at the rain-soaked Moorpark Invitational. She also placed fourth in the hammer and javelin despite difficult weather conditions.

In a meet conventional wisdom thought would get canceled due to frigid temperatures and steady rain, Ventura's men's and women's track and field teams performed at a high level Friday in the annual Moorpark Open Invitational. The adverse conditions did not deter Serenity Valoaga as she scored wins in the discus and shot put events and lead the team as the only double winner of the day. Karen Reyes (400m), Sandra Harness (long jump), Krystal Tapia (hammer), Jordan Gibson (400m), and Daniel Burquez (javelin) rounded out the Pirate first-place finishes.
Valoaga topped off her day also scoring fourth place in the hammer and javelin despite the fact the throwing rings were under water. Tapia (discus), Andrea Rios (100m hurdles), and Daniel Alejandre
(discus) were second place winners. Max Carmona (800m), Ronnie Parker (long jump), Burquez (triple jump), and Nikolas Ramirez (shot put & javelin) all collected bronze medals.
"The meet was a nice opportunity for our track staff to see how our young people would perform under less than ideal conditions", commented head track coach Tony Veney.
"Only a few of the times and distances made today would rank among the Top-10 in the conference, but the effort they displayed was very encouraging."
The Pirates next travel to Occidental College on Saturday March 10 for the Oxy Distance Spring Classic in the city of Eagle Rock. Sprint, hurdle and jump events start at 11:00 am, while the distance portion begins at 5:00 pm.
