School Record in Men's 4x200 Highlights WSC Relays

Ventura's 4x200m relay team of Max Carmona, Richard Celedon, Jordan Gibson, and Kamar Wilson highlighted the Pirates' performances at the Western State conference relays in Bakersfield Friday, turning in a school record mark of 1:31.59, leading 16 top three finishes for VC. Karen Reyes won in the 400 hurdles and Serenity Valoaga took first in the shot put for the VC women. Meanwhile, Kamar Wilson took home gold in the high jump.

The meet got off to a rocky start when the women's 4x100 meter relay scored a decisive 10-meter victory, then moments later getting disqualified because of a lane violation. After that little speed bump, the Pirates go rolling to 16 top three finishes, with four first places.

Karen Reyes trailed by 10 meters with only two barriers to go in the 400 hurdles, but put on a furious attack and won going away. Serenity Valoaga, took first in the shot put, and Kamar Wilson improved on his seasonal best in the high jump for the top spot. The highlight of the gold medal performances came from the 4x200 meter relay of Carmona, Celedon, Gibson, and Wilson bested the school mark.

"This meet served as a nice preview for us in preparation for the conference meet next week," commented head coach Tony Veney. "I have to do a better job preparing the relays, but overall, we had a good meet with over a dozen seasonal bests."

The Pirates play host to Canyons, Santa Barbara, Cuesta, Allan Hancock, and Bakersfield Friday Feb. 23 for the WSC 6-way scoring meet. Field events start at noon and the first running event goes off at 1:00 pm at the VC Sportsplex.
