T&F Places at WSC North Meet

TRACK & FIELD:  In windy conditions with a cold rain, the Pirates' men's and women's track and field teams traveled to the Western State Conference North meet at Bakersfield College Friday, with the Pirate women placing third and the men placing fourth of the six teams participating. The throwing of Brittnee Jones and Andisha Steward accounted for 48 of the women's 112 points (Canyons and Bakersfield scored 134 and 123 points, respectively) while Keenan Davis, Dylan Roberts, and Steven Lang led the men in the field events.

Jones placed in three events (1st hammer, 3rd shot put and 3rd discus), as did Steward (1st discus, 2nd shot put & 2nd hammer). Other top scorers were Danielle Colvin (1st long jump), Sabrina Sewell (1st 400 hurdles), and Emily Stephenson (2nd triple jump).

Davis (2nd long jump & 3rd triple jump) and Roberts (3rd long jump & 2nd triple jump) each placed in two events and Lang was second in the hammer throw. Jake Herbold placed third in the 400 hurdles while both men's relays also garnered 3rd place finishes. The men scored 81 points (almost doubling last year's total) as College of the Canyons (198), Allan Hancock (103) and Santa Barbara (87) finished in the top three.

"We performed well considering the conditions," said head track coach, Tony Veney. "When the weather takes over like it did Friday, what you want to see is effort and focus, and I believe we were able to achieve both. "

The Pirates travel to Cerritos College for a scoring meet on Friday March 7. The field events start at noon and the first running event will begin at 1:00 pm.
