The Ventura College softball team opened the 2024 season Friday with a 10-2 setback against Antelope Valley at the Glendale Tournament. Jennie Jacinto and Kaliona Hernandez had hits for the Pirates and Jacinto and Raylene Reyes each scored runs. Chelsea Trejo made the start in the circle for Ventura (0-1).

Jacinto singled to open the game and came all the way around to score when Reyes reached base on an error. Savanna Higgins struck out swinging, but was able to reach first on a wild pitch, moving Reyes to third. One batter later, Reyes scored on Trejo's sacrifice fly for an early 2-0 Pirate edge.

The Marauders answered immediately, however, scoring twice in the bottom of the first. They added six runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the fourth before closing out the Pirates in the top of the fifth.

Ventura returns to Glendale on Saturday Jan. 27 to take on San Diego Mesa and Modesto to close out the tournament.
