Ventura Walks Off Oxnard in Six Innings

In their final regular season home game of the year, the Pirate softball team defeated Oxnard 10-2 Tuesday, walking off with the run-rule victory in the bottom of the sixth inning. Leanna De La Cruz had a pair of hits, including a triple, with two runs scored and a run batted in while Ahlyssa Guzman scored three runs with a pair of hits. Isabel Gallegos had two hits and two RBI for VC (25-11, 8-1).

Ashlyn Flinchum pitched two innings on no-hit ball to start the game before giving way to sophomore Morgan Albertsen, who threw the final four frames.

VC jumped out early with a three-run first inning. Guzman and De La Cruz led off with a singles before Guzman scored on a passed ball. After Lauren Albrent was hit by a itch and moved to second on another passed ball, De La Cruz scored when Gallegos grounded out to second. One out later, Courtney Terrazas reached base on an error and Albrent scored for the 3-0 Pirate margin.

Ventura scored three more runs in the bottom of the second. With one out, Guzman singled, moved to second on a passed ball and stole third. De La Cruz followed with an RBI triple. Albrent hit an RBI single before stealing second and third, and Isabella Ayala hit a two-out RBI single to make it 6-0 for the Pirates.

The Condors scored once in the top of the fourth before VC came back with a pair on the bottom half of the inning. Guzman got to first on an error, and moved to second on a passed ball. She stole third before scoring when Serena Carmona reached base on an error. Gallegos then singled home Carmona.

Oxnard plated another score in the fifth inning, and VC answered with a Kat Tafoya double, a walk by Abby Strong, and De La Cruz reaching base on an error to score Tafoya.

In the bottom of the sixth, Gallegos led off with a single and stole second. One out later, Terrazas singled to score Gallegos as the Pirates walked off with the run-rule triumph.

Ventura will next travel to Moorpark on Tuesday April 19. The game against the Raiders is scheduled to begin at 2:30 pm.
