Quick Start Pushed Pirates Past Eagles

Ventura's Ahlyssa Guzman was 3-3, including a triple, with three runs scored, a stolen base and an RBI as the Pirates defeated Los Angeles Mission College 7-3 Tuesday at the VC Softball Complex.

The Pirate softball team scored three runs in each of the first two innings Tuesday en route to a 7-3 victory over Los Angeles Mission College at the VC Softball Complex. Ahlyssa Guzman was 3-3, including a triple, with three runs scored, a stolen base and a run batted in to lead Ventura (11-4) while Lauren Albrent had three hits with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. Kat Tafoya made the start in the circle, picking up the win with six innings pitched and Ashlyn Flinchum pitched the seventh to pick up the save.

Ventura got the early jump on LA Mission with a three-run first inning. With one out, Guzman walked and Albrent followed with a single. Isabella Ayala then hit an RBI single, moving to second on the throw home as Guzman scored. Abby Strong grounded out to first base scoring Albrent and Isabel Gallegos hit an RBI single to score Ayala for the 3-0 Pirate advantage.

LA Mission answered with a run in the top of the second before VC plated three more scores in the bottom half of the frame.

Serena Carmona led off the inning with a double, and two outs later Guzman tripled yo bring Carmona home. Albrent followed with another RBI triple before Ayala reached first on an error scoring Albrent.

In the bottom of the fourth, Guzman hit a one-out single, then stole second base. Another out later Ayala hit an RBI triple for a 7-1 Pirate margin.

LAMC scored twice in the sixth inning to set the final 7-3 margin.

Ventura next opens Western State Conference play on Thursday March 10 at Cuesta College.
