Ventura Returns Home to Defeat Glendale, 11-3

The Ventura College softball team returned home Friday and posted an 11-3 victory against Glendale. The Pirates scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to walk off in the run-rule decision after six innings. Isabella Ayala was 3-3 with a triple and a run scored in the contest while Aaliyah Arias was 2-3 with a run scored an a pair of runs batted in. Morgan Albertsen settled down after the first inning to pitch five complete to pick up the win in the circle for Ventura (9-4).

In their first game at home in nearly two weeks, the Pirates got off to a difficult start spotting the Vaqueros three runs in the top of the first inning.

VC came back, however, and scored six in the bottom half of the frame to establish control of the contest. Ashley Perez singled to open the inning, then came all the way around to score on a pair of errors during the next at bat. Ahlyssa Guzman reached base on an error and stole second before Lauren Albrent walked. Abby Strong grounded out to move the runners ahead one base and Isabel Gallegos singled home Guzman before stealing second. Arias followed with an RBI single, and also promptly stole second base. The runners advanced on a passed ball with Gallegos crossing the plate and Jocelyn Ortega drew a free base, also taking second with a steal. Arias then scored on another passed ball and Courtney Terrazas grounded out to score Ortega.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Pirates added another run to move their lead to 7-4. Ayala singled and Perez reached base on a fielders choice with a force out at second. Guzman singled and Albrent walked to load the bases before Kayla Garza hit into a fielder's choice to score Perez.

Ventura scored four more times to end the game in the sixth inning. Ayala led off with a triple and Perez was hit by a pitch before taking second with a theft. Guzman hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Ayala, and Strong tripled home Perez one out later. Strong then scored on a passed ball and Gallegos singled and stole second. Arias followed with a walk-off single that scored Gallegos to complete the triumph.

Albertsen settled in after the first, allowing just two hits and four base runners in her final four innings of work. Kat Tafoya pitched a scoreless sixth inning for the Pirates.

VC makes a quick turnaround, hosting Orange Coast on Saturday March 5 at 12:00 pm.
