The Ventura College softball team returned to the win column Thursday with an 8-2 victory at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria. Marisa Felix had two hits, including a home run, and three runs batted in to lead Ventura while Kali Brown was 2-4, including a triple, with two runs scored. Serrina Cabral also had two hits, including a double, and a pair of RBI in the game for Ventura (16-14, 8-3). Jessica Mendoza picked up the victory in the pitcher's circle with the complete game.
Adriana Clemons scored the Pirates' first run of the game in the top of the second inning. She had a one-out single, then moved to second base on Kaylee Neal's groundout. She then moved to third on a passed ball and scored an unearned run on an error for the 1-0 Pirate advantage.
Brown's one-out triple followed by Cabral's sacrifice fly doubled VC's score in the top of the third inning, and Felix led off the fourth with a solo home run for a 3-0 Ventura lead.
The Bulldogs scored one run in the bottom of the fourth before the Pirates answered with another score in the sixth. Clemons singled to lead off the frame, followed by a walk by Neal. The pair executed a double steal, then Clemons scored when Cassidy Craig was thrown out on a bunt, pitcher to first.
Ventura broke the game open with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Brown reached base on an error and scored on Cabral's double. Kayla Garcia then singled and stole second before Felix hit both runners around with a 2-RBI single. Bertha Orozco pinch ran for Felix, and scored on Mendoza's groundout two batters later.
Hancock scored one run in the bottom of the seventh for the final 8-2 margin.
Clemons ended the game with two hits and two runs scored while Mendoza and Craig each batted in a run.
Mendoza scattered nine hits in allowing just two earned runs in picking up the victory.
VC next heads to Woodland Hills on Tuesday April 9, taking on Los Angeles Pierce College at 2:30 pm.
