Softball Brings Home Split with Hancock

The Ventura College softball team traveled north to Santa Maria to take on Allan Hancock in a Western State Conference doubleheader. The Pirates picked up a split on the day dropping the opener 6-2 before rallying to win the second game 11-5. Lindsey Dietz had two hits on the day with a triple. Julia Garcia added three hits and a triple. Farris Burke and Mariah Gamboa each had two hits.

In the opener the Pirates bats were held in check by the Bulldogs pitching picking up seven hits and just two runs. VC used Olivia Hernandez in the circle for the first game. Dietz picked up two hits, drove in both Pirates runs and had a triple to pace the Pirates offense. Ventura fell behind early and was unable to mount a comeback until the seventh inning when they plated both of their runs.

Looking to salvage a split for the day Ventura used an offensive explosion to earn the conference win. The Pirates were efficient with their offense using 11 hits as a team to plate the 11 runs. Claira Lozano started in the circle and picked up the win for VC. Garcia had three hits in the game with a triple and drove in four runs. Marina Coffin had one hit a double and drove in one run. Julianne Abeloe drove in one run.

Ventura trailed 5-3 heading to the fifth inning then scored eight runs over the final three frames to win. The Pirates broke the game open with a six run fifth inning.

Ventura (18-13, 5-5) hosts San Bernardino Valley on Thursday Apr. 7 for a 3:00 pm game. They will then return to WSC North play on Tuesday Apr. 12 when they travel to Oxnard College for a doubleheader set to begin at 1:00 pm.
