Softball Splits a Pair on Opening Day

Ventura College women's softball team traveled to Glendale College for opening day to their season. The Pirates were able to split a pair of games on the day, falling to Santiago Canyon 6-2 in their opener, but rebounding to down Barstow College 19-2 in the later game. Claira Lozano had two hits in the opener, while Julia Garcia collected three in the win over Barstow. Five other Pirates collected multiple hits on the day. Farris Burke picked up the win over Barstow.

Olivia Hernandez started the game for the Pirates in the circle and was dealt her first loss of the season. Lozano knocked out two hits and drove in one of the Pirates runs with Brittney Banales having an rbi triple as well. Ventura had a total of seven hits to the 11 collected by Santiago Canyon and scored both of their runs in the fourth inning.

Ventura 19 Barstow 2

Responding to their season opening loss the Ventura bats came alive against Barstow. VC picked up 16 hits in the victory and had six players with multiple hits topped by Garcia with her three hits and two rbi's. Lindsey Dietz, Julianne Abeloe, Julianna Andrade, Justine De La Rosa, Mariah Gamboa and Burke each had two hits in the game. Burke was the winning pitcher as well going five innings and allowing just two hits on the game. Abeloe drove in three runs, Dietz plated two runs with a triple, Andrade had two rbi's while De La Rosa drove in three runs for the Pirate offensive attack.

Ventura (1-1) will wrap up their season opening weekend on Saturday Jan. 30 with a 5:00 pm game against Long Beach City College at Glendale College. Then they will return to the field at 7:00 pm again to take on Santa Ana College for their final game of the Glendale tournament.
