Pirates Drop Conference Opener at Hancock

The Pirate softball team dropped a 10-2, five-inning decision at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria Thursday to open Western State Conference Gold Division play. Yamilex Ruiz, Mariah Gamboa and Claira Lozano all had hits for the Pirates.

Hancock took control with a seven-run third inning.  The Pirates plated two runs in the top of the fifth inning to avoid the shutout.  Ruiz led off the inning with a double, VC's first hit of the game. Gamboa followed with an RBI double, then Lozano had a run-scoring single one batter later.

Ventura (5-12, 0-1) travels to Oxnard on Thursday March 12.  Their next home game is a double-header against LA Pierce on Tuesday March 24.
