Pirate SB Splits Four at MSJC

SOFTBALL:  The Ventura College softball team split four games over the weekend against Foothill Conference opponents at the Mt. San Jacinto College Tournament. On Saturday, the Pirates (4-5-1)pounded San Bernardino Valley 17-1 in five innings before falling to College of the Desert 6-1. Sunday VC defeated Rio Hondo 11-3 before narrowly dropping a slugfest to Barstow, 11-10. Julia Garcia had a solid weekend at the plate with seven hits, including a pair of home runs, and 12 RBI in the four games.

Ventura 17, San Bernardino Valley 1; 2-15-14
Olivia Hernandez started in the pitcher's circle for VC giving up six hits and no earned runs with three strikeouts. The Pirates totaled 20 hits in the five-inning contest. Julia Garcia was 2-2 with four RBI and Alex Thorp was 3-3 with a pair of runs batted in. Ashley thorp also had three safeties, including a triple, with two RBI and Emily Heath had two hits and batten in three runs. Alyssa Mendoza was 2-2 with a triple and three RBI and Ashley Cerda had three hits.

Ventura 1, College of the Desert 6; 2-15-14
Ventura was limited to three hits on the day, by Alex Thorpe, Heath and Veronica Garcia. Alex Thorpe tripled in the fifth inning and scored on an error for Ventura's lone run. She was also the pitcher of record in the game.

Ventura 11, Rio Hondo 3; 2-16-14
The Pirates banged out a dozen hits in the game, led by Julia Garcia's 2-4 performance with a home run and four RBI. Veronica Garcia was 2-3 with a double and two RBI while Emily Heath also batted in a pair of runs with two hits. Mendoza ahd two hits, including a double, and Roxanne Lopez was 2-3 with three runs scored. Alex Thorpe was 2-2 with an RBI and pitched for the win, giving up five hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts.

Ventura 10, Barstow 11; 2-16-14
Julia Garcia was 3-5 with a home run and four RBI to lead the way in the narrow loss. Garcia, Ashley Thorp and Mendoza all homered for the Pirates.

Ventura plays Victor valley on Monday Feb. 17 at home in a 1:00 pm contest before hitting the road at Cerritos on Wednesday Feb. 19 in a 2:00 pm game.
