VC Struggles at Glendale

SOFTBALL:  The Pirate softball team struggled over the weekend at the Glendale Tournament, dropping three games while finishing a fourth in a tie on Friday and Saturday. VC (1-3-1) dropped an 8-3 decision to Antelope Valley to open the circuit before falling 11-3 to Santiago Canyon on Friday. They opened Saturday with a 4-4 tie against San Diego Mesa before falling 7-1 to Long Beach City College in the tournament finale. Julia Garcia led the offense with five hits and seven RBI in the four games while Ashley Cerda had four hits.

Ventura 3, Antelope Valley 8; 1-31-14
Olivia Hernandez started in the pitcher's circle for VC and the offense totaled seven hits. Emily Heath was 2-2 at the plate with a pair of doubles and Garcia went 1-2 with an RBI. Alyssa Mendoza batted 1-2 with a run batted in.

Ventura 3, Santiago Canyon 11; 1-31-14
Cerda hit 2-4 in the game and Garcia was 1-3 with two RBI. Ashley Thorp had a hit and an RBI. Alex Thorp took the loss as pitcher for the Pirates.

Ventura 4, San Diego Mesa 4; 2-1-14
The Pirates and Olympians finished in a 4-4 tie, which is allowed in tournament play. Ashley Cerda was 2-3 and Garcia had a pair of hits, including a 3-run homerun, with four RBI in the game. Alex Thorp pitched for VC.

Ventura 1, Long Beach 7; 2-1-14
Garcia was 1-2 in the game with at triple and Melissa Serrano hit 2-2 with a solo homerun. Olivia Hernandez took the mound for Ventura.

The Pirates will open their home schedule on Tuesday Feb. 4 at 2:30 pm against Los Angeles Valley College at the VC Softball Complex. They will then travel to the Mt. San Jacinto Tournament Feb. 15-16.
