The Ventura College men's water polo team dropped its Western State Conference opener at Cuesta 19-4 Wednesday afternoon in San Luis Obispo. Owen Cugnoni had a pair of goals while Scott Wagner and Sebastian Ayala also scored for the Pirates.

It was difficult swimming for Ventura against the No. 10-ranked Cougars. Cuesta pulled out to a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back against the Pirates.

Cugnoni added a pair of drawn ejections and two steals to his scoring total and Thomas Vels had an assist, a drawn ejection and a steal. Michael Soho and Kyle Wagner also handed out assists for VC.

Ventura next travels to the Cerritos Mini on Friday Sept. 29 to play Fullerton and the host Falcons.
