Pirate Men Split Sunday at Mt. SAC Tournament

The Pirates' men's water polo team continued their one-up, one-down season on Saturday with a split of a pair of matches to conclude the Mt. San Antonio College Tournament . Ventura (5-5) outmatched Southwestern 20-8 before falling to Orange Coast 16-8 in games played at Citrus College in Glendora. VC's depth showed through the day as nine different Pirates scored a goal in the two games and the team had three goalkeepers play significant minutes, as well.

Ventura 20, Southwestern 8
Ventura jumped all over the Jaguars from the beginning, opening up a 6-1 lead after one quarter of play, and a 10-4 advantage at halftime. Tanner Islander was on fire with seven goals to lead the way while Justin Bouse netted five scores. Brandon Bouse scored three goals. Jarett Baldwin had a pair of goals with six steals on defense and CJ Thrall had a goal with six assists. Leonardo Lopez scored once with three assists and three steals while Micah Peterson had a goal and three assists. Frank Lopez had ten saves in goal with four assists and a pair of steals.

Ventura 8, Orange Coast 16
VC was unable to sustain their momentum in the final match of the weekend. The Ventura Pirates trailed the Orange Coast Pirates 4-3 at the end of the first quarter, and 7-4 at halftime. After Ventura scored to open the second half, OCC rattled off five straight goals to take control of the match. Glenn Ishida led VC with three goals and two drawn exclusions and Kyle Goodrich had two goals, two steals, an assist and one exclusion. Brandon Bouse netted a pair of scores and Baldwin grabbed three steals. Dalton Esrofani had six saves in the cage and Derek Gamberutti turned back four Orange Coast shots.

Ventura will open its home schedule on Thursday Sept. 21 against 2016 State Final Four participant Long Beach City College.  Play is set to begin at 2:15pm at the Ventura Aquatic Center.
