Men's Polo Falls Twice at Orange Coast Mini

The Pirates' men's water polo team fell twice Saturday in Costa Mesa at the Orange Coast Mini Tournament.  VC (19-11, 3-1) fell to Grossmont in overtime, 13-11 in the opener before dropping a 19-9 decision to the host Orange Coast Pirates in the nightcap.  Coby Wiegman totaled six goals on the day while Kyle Goodrich had five scores.

Ventura held a 10-9 lead late in regulation time, but the Griffins forced the extra period with a goal with 51 seconds remaining in regulation time.  The Pirates had scored three straight goals to rebound from a 9-7 deficit in the fourth quarter to set up the late Grossmont goal.

Goodrich led the team with four scores, one assist, two drawn exclusions and a steal while CJ Daland found the net three times with an assist and a pair of thefts. Wiegman had one goal with a pair of helpers and five steals and Kevin Smallwood scored once with an assist and seven steals.  Luis Galvez had five saves and three steals in the cage for the Pirates.

VC fell behind 6-2 after one quarter and trailed 14-4 at halftime against the Pirates from the south. Wiegman had five goals in the game with an assist and two steals while Goodrich, Daland, Smallwood and Jack Pickett all scored one goal each.  Galvez had four blocks in the goal with four steals.

Ventura closes the regular season on Saturday Oct. 29 with the Ventura Mini at the Ventura Aquatic Center.  Games and times will be released as game day approaches.  CV will then play in the Western State Conference Tournament in San Luis Obispo on Nov. 3-5.
