Pirates Prevail Twice In Home Debut

Making their home debut, the VC men's water polo team posted a pair of victories Saturday at the Ventura Aquatic Center.  The Pirates (9-5) defeated the VC Alumni 20-13 in the morning game before besting the Ventura Masters Club 14-12 in the afternoon.  CJ Daland continued his offensive prowess with 10 goals on the day with two assists and three steals and Coby Wiegman netted five scores in the two matches.

The current Pirates outlasted their more experiences counterparts, outscoring the former Pirates 12-5 in the second half.  Daland had six goals with a pair of steals while Clint Howard had three goals with five ejections drawn, three steals and an assist.  Kevin Smallwood was a presence defensively with seven steals to go along with a pair of goals and two assists and Jack Pickett found the net twice with a drawn ejection and three steals.  Wiegman scored twice with two assists and Luis Galvez had 16 goalie blocks, two assists and a steal while guarding the cage.

In their second match of the day, Ventura jumped out to a 9-3 advantage at intermission, cruising to the finish.  Daland led the offense once again with four scores with an assist and a steal.  Wiegman found the back of the net three times while Isaac Alvary had two gaol, two assists and two steals. Micah Peterson also scored twice in the victory. Juan Enriquez had seven saves in goal.

The Pirates open up Western State COnference play on Wednesday Sept. 28.  The home match is slated to begin at 2:15pm at the Ventura Aquatic Center.  VC will travel to the Saddleback Tournament in Mission Viejo Friday and Saturday Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
