Pirates Claim One-Fourth of Ojai Quarterfinals

The Pirates' men's tennis team advanced two singles players and two doubles teams into the quarterfinal round of the 3C2A State Tournament at The Ojai on Friday. Cody Ray Emery and Robinson Pelluault will face off in a Round of 8 match Saturday morning while the doubles pairs of Emery and Lucas Abreu along with Rafael Matias and Julian Tellez will play quarterfinal matches on Saturday afternoon.

In singles play, Emery defeated his opponent from American River, 6-4, 6-1, to move into the Round of 16 before winning 7-5, 4-0, ret. against a player from Foothill College to advance to the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, Pelluault had a great day, first with a 6-3, 7-5 upset win over American River, then a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Santa Barbara's No. 1 player.

Abreau spent nearly six hours on the singles courts Friday morning. He won his Round of 32 match against a player from Chabot, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, then dropped a heartbreaker against Glendale, 2-6, 7-6 (6-3), 7-5.

Matias also had a a difficult loss in the Round of 16. He won his first match of the day, 6-3, 6-2, against an opponent from Foothill College before dropping a three-set decision to another Foothill Owl, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

Tellez was also in action in singles play, winning his Round of 32 contest 6-1, 6-1 against a player from American River before dropping his match against Glendale's No. 1 player, 7-5, 6-0.

Doubles play began in the afternoon. Emery and Abreu raced to a love-love win over a team from San Diego City in the Round of 32 before moving forward to the quarters with a 6-2, 4-6 [10-6] victory over a pair from Riverside.

Matias and Tellez also easily won their first match of the day against Solano, 6-1, 6-0 and survived a 7-6, 1-6 [10-2] decision against Riverside to advance to the Elite Eight of the draw.

Pelluault and Edgar Ploquin captured their initial contest Friday with a 6-2, 6-7 [10-7] against a team from Chabot before falling in the Round of 16 against Glendale's No. 1 pair, 6-2, 6-3.

Quarterfinal play in singles and doubles will continue Saturday April 27 at the Ojai Athletic Club.
