The Pirates' men's tennis team took over the top spot in the Western State Conference standings Tuesday with a 7-2 victory over Glendale at the VC Tennis Center. Lucas Abreau, Julian Tellez and Edgar Ploquin were all double-winners for VC (6-3, 2-0).

The match was much closer than the final score indicated as the Pirates and Vaqueros entered play as two of the top teams in the state.

Ventura took the early lead with wins of two of three doubles matches including an 8-4 victory at the No. 3 slot by Tellez and Ploquin to get things started. Abreau and Thomas Lindner then claimed VC's second point with an 8-6 triumph at No. 2 doubles.  Glendale salvaged one point by winning the No. 1 doubles match.

Abreau was the first to finish in singles, winning at No. 3, 6-4, 6-2. Robinson Pelluault gave Ventura a 4-1 advantage by claiming the No. 5 singles slot 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 and Tellez clinched the victory with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 triumph at No. 4 singles. Rafael Matias also took three sets to win at No. 2, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 before Cody Ray Emery dropped a razor-close 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) decision at No. 1. Ploquin finished off the match with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 6 singles.

The victory was Ventura's 49th straight regular season win against community college teams going back to March 15, 2019 and their 21st consecutive WSC victory dating back to a March 7, 2019 setback against Glendale.

VC next travels to Riverside on Friday March 1.
