Men's Tennis Battles 4-Year Schools on Two-Day Swing

The VC men's tennis team went on the road Monday and Tuesday to battle a pair of four-year schools. The Pirates battled but fell short against Menlo College 6-1 before dropping a contest at Fresno Pacific, 7-0. Cody Ray Emery won his No. 1 singles match against Menlo on Monday while Lucas Abreau and Thomas Lindner won at No. 2 doubles at FPU. Rafael Matias and Abreau both went the distance in their singles matches on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. 

The Pirates met Menlo from Atherton half way on Monday playing in Avila Beach at the Avila Bay Athletic Club. The Pirates battled the Oaks, but ultimately fell against the four-year NAIA school, 6-1. 

Menlo won the match point for doubles by sweeping all three contests by identical 6-3 scores

In singles, Emery captured his No. 1 slot with a come-from-behind victory, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 while Matias captured the first set at No. 2, 6-2 before falling 7-6, 6-2 in the final two. Edgar Polquin and Thomas Lindner each dropped their first set 7-6 before falling in the second at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, respectively.

VC then traveled to Fresno Pacific for a contest Tuesday, dropping a 7-0 decision.

Abreau and Lindner won their No. 2 doubles match 6-3, but the Pirates dropped the Nos. 1 and 3 contests as the Sunbirds captured the doubles point. Emery and Matias had to face former Pirate Brodie Sodersten in No. 1 doubles.

Abreau also had a solid effort at No. 3 doubles, dropping the first set 6-4 before winning the second 6-2 to send the match to a tiebreaker. Matias pushed his opponent in the second set in No. 2 singles, falling 7-5.

The Pirates will make their home debut on Friday Feb. 16 hosting Saddleback at 12:00 pm.
