All three men's doubles teams and three of VC's singles entrants advanced past day one of the CCCAA State Singles and Doubles Championships Thursday at The Ojai Tournament. Lucas Abreau, Santino Serralonga and Jinsei Tajima all moved forward in both the singles and doubles draws for the Pirates.
Abreau advanced to the round of 32 in singles with a pair of upset wins. The unseeded Pirate defeated the NorCal No. 9-seed from Diablo Valley 6-1, 6-4 before winning over the SoCal No. 8-seed from Riverside, 6-1, 6-4.
Serralonga, the No. 2 seed from SoCal easily won both of his matches on the day, love and love over an opponent from El Camino and 6-1, 6-1 against a player from Bakersfield.
Meanwhile, SoCal No. 4-seed Tajima won love and three over a foe from Diablo Valley before beating a player from Desert, 6-1, 6-1.
SoCal No. 14 Philemon Jabin won his Round of 64 match against Modesto, 6-1, 6-0 before falling to the NorCal No. 4 seed from Foothill, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.
No. 15-seed from SoCal Julian Tellez won his opener love and love over an opponent from American River before falling to SoCal's top seed from Desert, 6-1, 6-2.
The Pirates' Valentino Oggero dropped his opening match against the SoCal No. 5-seed from Riverside, 5-7, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles play, No. 3-seed from SoCal Tajima and Jabin had an easy love, love win over opponents from Folsom Lake College while SoCal-No. 11 Serralonga and Oggero defeated a duo from Saddleback 6-0, 6-2 to move into the Round of 32. Abreau and Eduardo Gorgonio Criscuolo, the No. 16-seed from SoCal, defeated a team from Orange Coast, 6-2, 6-3.
In singles, the Round of 16 continues on Friday April 28 with quarterfinals and semifinals slated from Saturday April 29. Doubles play on Friday will include the Round of 32 and the Round of 16 in afternoon play.
