Men's Tennis Dominates All-WSC Selections

After a dominant season in which the Pirates' men's tennis team went 6-0 in Western State Conference play, winning 52 of 54 matches in those six contests, it comes as no surprise that VC dominated the All-WSC awards handed out at the conclusion of the season. Five Pirates were named first team All-WSC in singles while all three doubles pairs earned first team all-conference recognition as voted upon by the conference coaches.

Second-year freshman Brodie Sodersten was named first team All-WSC in the No. 2 singles slot, and teamed up with freshman Sam Ashbrook to earn first team honors in No. 1 doubles. Ashbrook also earned first team all-conference accolades as VC's No. 4 singles player. Sodersten was 4-0 in WSC play in the No. 2 singles slot and 1-0 in the top match. He claimed the WSC men's singles title and went 18-1 on the season. In doubles play, he and Ashbrook went 5-0 in conference matches and 19-3 overall.  Ashbrook, meanwhile, was 5-0 in WSC play at the Nos. 3, 4, and 6 spots, 19-2 on the year.

Second-year freshman Yuya Koide claimed the first team All-WSC award for No. 3 singles, and was first team all-conference in No. 2 doubles with Ryan Lam. Koide posted a record of 5-0 in No. 3 singles in WSC play, going 20-3 on the season while he was 6-0 in WSC doubles matches, five at the No. 2 slot and one in the top match. The pair was 20-4 overall on the year.

First-year player Jinsei Tajima was first team all-conference in the No. 5 singles slot. He also paired with Philemon Jabin to earn the conference's top award in No. 3 doubles. Jabin also earned second team All-WSC honors in No. 1 singles. Tajima went 2-0 in WSC singles play, 15-2 overall while he and Jabin recorded six wins without a loss in the conference with a 21-3 season mark. Jabin, VC's No. 1 singles player, was 5-1 in WSC play, 21-7 during the season.

Santino Serralonga, also a first-year freshman, was named first team All-WSC in No. 6 singles. He recorded a 6-0 singles record in the WSC, 4-0 at No. 4. He had an overall record of 20-2 in 2022, advancing to the conference singles title match.

The Pirates dominated WSC competition in 2022, claiming the program's 14th conference championship in the last 17 seasons. VC last won in 2018, and had the title clinched in 2020 before the Covid-19 pandemic canceled the season without a formal crown awarded. Overall, the Pirates have won 21 WSC titles.
