Men's Tennis Ends Season in State Quarterfinals

The VC men's tennis season came to a close Friday with a pair of players in the state quarterfinals in singles and two doubles teams also advancing to the round of eight at the CCCAA State Championships at Mt. San Antonio College. Brodie Sodersten and Philemon Jabin each won their first singles match before bowing out of the draw, as did the duos of Jabin and Jinsei Tajima along with Yuya Koide and Ryan Lam.

Sodersten, the No. 6-seed from Southern California defeated the No. 3-seed from NorCal from American River College, 6-2, 6-0 before succumbing to the SoCal No. 1 player from Irvine Valley, 6-0, 6-1.

Jabin, SoCal's No. 8 player, provided the biggest upset of the first round when he produced a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over the North's No. 1-seed from American River. In the quarterfinal round, Jabin dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to the South No. 4-seed from Irvine Valley.

In doubles play, South No. 4 Koide and Lam defeated the North No. 5 team from Chabot, 6-2, 6-2 before falling in the round of eight to NorCal's top-seed from American River, 6-3, 6-4.

Jabin and Tajima, the No. 7-ranked team from SoCal defeated the North No. 2 from American River 7-5, 6-1 to reach the quarters. They then fell 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) to the South No. 3-seed from Desert.

The quarterfinal round losses ended another successful season for the Pirates. They won the Western State Conference for the 21st season and recorded an 18-1 team dual record, 6-0 in WSC play.
